World Health Organization Sounds Warning Over Severe Lack of Weight-Loss Injections

Under 10% of individuals eligible to benefit from GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy are able to get them, states the WHO as it publishes its initial guidance on the medications.

With in excess of 1,000,000,000 people worldwide currently living with obesity, it is advocating for more widespread and fairer availability to GLP-1 medication.

Based on forecasts, in excess of 2,000,000,000 could be living with obesity by 2030 if no action is taken.

"The latest guidelines acknowledges that excess weight is a chronic disease that can be addressed with thorough and continuous treatment," stated WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, constrained manufacturing, and distribution challenges are key barriers to universal availability to the jabs that can assist patients in reducing substantial body mass, notes the body.

GLP-1 Therapy Shortage

Despite the current best projected outlook, the supply of GLP-1 therapies might only reach about 100 million people – under 10% of eligible patients, per the health organization.

The recommendation encourages governments and firms to expand availability, via approaches such as voluntary licensing.

Exclusive production rights on the active ingredient – the core component of a leading brand – is scheduled to end in multiple countries in 2026.

The Way Weight-Loss Injections Function

The injections mimick a biological compound to slow digestion, reduce hunger and enhance satiety so people consume fewer calories.

Individuals typically begin shedding pounds after several weeks of commencing the regular doses.

Research suggests users may regain a significant portion after a year of stopping the medication, because their normal food cravings resume.

Being carrying excess weight increases your chance for contracting diseases, like diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and specific malignancies.

Obesity concerns people in every country and was associated with 3.7 million fatalities worldwide in 2024, as per the health agency.
