Users Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users purchasing such medications need to be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened regain.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs explain a intense return of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle management.
