UN Lifts Restrictions on President of Syria Before White House Visit

Security Council representatives voted in favour to a United States-backed measure ending penalties on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa before his presidential meeting the following week.

He became interim leader following his leadership in an insurgent campaign that drove out the former president in the final month of 2024, ending over a decade of internal conflict.

The US representative UN ambassador Mike Waltz stated the United Nations delivered "a strong political signal" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a fresh chapter" following Assad's ouster.

Previously, he faced global penalties in his role as head of the religious organization the HTS movement, which was formerly linked to al-Qaeda. America delisted HTS from a list of global extremist entities this past July.

Additional Sanctions Relief

Additionally, the United Nations lifted sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab.

The nation's top diplomat welcomed the removal of these restrictions, declaring through digital channels: "The nation shows its gratitude toward America and supportive states for backing the country and its population."

Imminent Washington Talks

Sharaa's White House visit at the start of the week follows US President Donald Trump remarked that Sharaa achieved "significant advancement" towards bringing peace to the previously divided state.

Following their discussion, Trump remarked the Syrian leader possessed "a genuine opportunity at pulling it together".

The two leaders convened initially in May, during Trump's Riyadh trip on a tour of the Middle East.

Following that encounter, America's leader characterized him as a "resilient figure" possessing a "powerful background".

His former militant faction served as al-Qaeda's branch inside the country until he severed ties during 2016.

Prior United States Journey

This week's diplomatic engagement will not be Sharaa's first trip to the United States during this period. During September, he became the first Syrian leader to speak before the United Nations gathering at UN headquarters in almost 60 years.

In his speech, he declared the nation was "restoring its proper position within the global community" and demonstrated unity toward Gaza's residents.

  • The presidential discussion with Sharaa, once considered impossible, enhances Syrian aspirations
