The future president of the prestigious debating society has been removed from his position after failing a vote of confidence that followed his disputed online comments about the conservative activist.

The motion against George Abaraonye achieved the required super-majority to oust him from his position, according to an announcement from the society.

Contentious Posts

The dispute erupted after Mr Abaraonye reportedly shared messages on social media that appeared to welcome the death of Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot while speaking at a college in the United States.

According to reports, one Instagram post reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.

The president-elect is also said to have written in a messaging group with fellow students appearing to express approval of the event.

Election Results

The vote of confidence took place over the weekend, with results announced on Tuesday.

Society announcements showed that over twelve hundred votes were cast supporting removal, while just over five hundred were against the motion.

The announcement confirmed that the future president was deemed to have stepped down in following the Oxford Union's rules.

Procedural Disputes

Proceedings were informally suspended early on the previous day after the returning officer was reportedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from multiple individuals.

In a statement, Mr Abaraonye asserted that the count had been halted because electoral officials believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of process errors".

His response categorically refuted that any person acting for George had participated in intimidating or disruptive behavior.

Ongoing Dispute

The student stated that extremely serious issues had been referred to the governing body and that he continued as the elected leader.

His comment added that he was "proud and thankful to have the support of significantly more than half of students at Oxford" who voted to have a "safe election and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".

Critics have said that any failure to remove him would "demonstrate internationally that the Oxford Union has chosen ideology over integrity".

External Responses

On recently, Kirk's former chief of staff presented an open letter to the Oxford Union on a related program podcast.

The message accused the union of becoming a place where "presidents of the union publicly celebrate the assassination of a ideological rival".

The statement warned that if Mr Abaraonye were to remain in post, Kirk's allies would "directly reach out to every American political speaker who has ever graced the union's chamber and advise them against future participation".

The Oxford Union had previously criticized the student's comments after the activist's killing and stated that complaints filed against him had been referred for official review.

The president-elect had been one of several students to debate with the activist at the society in spring.
