The star has handed over the full amount of his £25k Mercury Prize cash to the trust for venues, which works to protect the United Kingdom's grassroots concert spaces.

The star was awarded the prize on 16 October as his latest record the album was named the top album of the previous year.

The musician has opted to hand the money over to the Music Venues Trust, in acknowledgment of the vital role grassroots venues fulfilled in his initial steps.

"I personally couldn't be pursuing what I am doing today if it hadn't been for all the shows I played around the North East, and elsewhere, when I was starting out," remarked the artist. "These venues are legendary, but they are struggling."

Beginning in 2023, more than 150 of these venues have shut down – approximately 16% of the whole industry in the UK.

Over the past year, major artists like Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the MVT in its attempts to help venues survive, by including a minor surcharge to their admission fees, which supports independent venues.

Fender also took part, collecting over £100k on his recent tour to help 38 local spots across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The money supported locations that were dealing with imminent closure due to issues caused by flooding, fire incidents and personal losses, as well as permit problems, legal disputes and noise complaints.

Other venues were granted financial assistance in modernizing facilities and technical equipment that helped artists and fans.

"The concept that revenue from concerts in large arenas helps the local stages, where it all starts for performers like me, is just common sense," the star has said.

Fender is not the first artist to contribute his Mercury Prize winnings to charitable organizations.

In they received the trophy in 1996 for their album the album, frontman Cocker announced that the act would donate their cash to the organization War Child.

During 2002, artist Ms Dynamite shared her award between several good causes, including the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"Additionally, I gave a thousand pounds to Highgate Newtown, to their classes, because I practiced gymnastics when I was a child and they required new equipment," the artist explained to outlets.

Two years ago, they contributed their prize money to the community center that nurtured their band, in addition to other independent music bodies.

Additionally winners that year they donated their winnings to a MS organization after a acquaintance was identified with the illness.

"The victory was sufficient," stated singer Heather Small. "The money was the cherry on top but we didn't require the extra, because we had the main prize. So our winning impacted the lives of others."

Last week, the MVT announced it had saved two local spots in the South East, by placing them under local control.

One venue in Southampton and The Croft in that location were bought under the Own Our Venues scheme, which is supported by Arts Council England and enthusiasts who buy "ownership units" in the buildings.
