Latin American Rugby Union Triumphs Fuel Men's World Cup Qualification Race

While many fans in the UK concentrate on their clubs' early-season performances or debate forthcoming autumn internationals, the battle for World Cup 2027 qualifying continues at full pace.

Chile's Historic Achievement

Chile earned their back-to-back appearance at the tournament with a sensational qualifying win against Samoa recently, leaving only one place left to be claimed for the host nation in two years. Meanwhile, the Paraguayan side stunned Brazil 39-19 in the first leg of their playoff.

The return match is scheduled on Saturday in Jacareí, close to São Paulo, while Brazil's men's team aims to follow their women's achievement and qualify for the first time.

Forthcoming Qualification Showdown

Whether Paraguay manages a shock overall win, or Brazil recovers following manager their coach's departure, the participants for next month's qualifying event in Dubai will be confirmed. The Namibian team, the Belgian squad, and the Samoan side are already confirmed their places for the Dubai-based competition from November 8th to 18th.

Global Qualifying Developments

Several other nations have also secured their places. The Hong Kong China team achieved first-time qualification following beating Korea 70-22 in July, and the Zimbabwean squad will return to the sport's most prestigious stage for the first occasion in over three decades after winning the Rugby Africa Cup.

Chile's Rising Reputation

The knock-on effect of Chile's playoff success ensures that Los Condores will play against Italy for the first time next month during the fall test series, replacing Samoa who are obligated to compete in the Dubai tournament.

The global governing body's CEO described Chile an "exciting and fast-emerging force" in confirming the forthcoming match in Genoa. As domestic the sport markets seek larger crowds, Chilean rugby is buoyant. A capacity crowd of more than twenty thousand saw the playoff victory in the coastal city, and manager the national coach has guided the squad on an improving path since his appointment in 2018.

Coach's Impressive Career

The fifty-year-old former Uruguay international prop has been influencing the game for many years: signed by the English club in the 1990s, he memorably ran straight through England defense to touch down at the 2003 global tournament.

His impact as national coach has been similarly powerful: Chile have risen to seventeenth place, their best ranking. During the last World Cup in France, they were defeated four times, conceding over two hundred points and scoring 27, featuring a 71-0 loss to the English team.

However, they confidently took the positive aspects, and after the tournament draw in Sydney on 3 December, the coach can begin planning in earnest. They faced Scotland previously, losing 52-11 in front of twenty-four thousand supporters, and while they were defeated across both matches by Uruguay in the initial 2027 playoff, they managed a narrow win on the road in Montevideo.

Samoa's Qualifying Struggle

The Samoan team, meanwhile, have participated in every Rugby World Cup since 1991, but are currently languishing in sixteenth place in the global rankings. They were winless in this year's Pacific Nations Cup, leading to playoff misery versus Chile, and the requirement to face nations such as Belgium brings additional difficulty for the rugby-loving country.

Competition Format Changes

Apart from specific teams' fortunes, it is important to consider how changed the larger competition will look in 2027. For the first occasion, there will be a knockout stage with six groups of four instead of four groups of five teams. Pool-stage jeopardy is significantly reduced because the four best third-place sides will also advance.

Hosts and Rankings Consequences

The organizers, Australia, are currently placed seventh in the world, which means they would fall short on a top seed and might meet one of South Africa, the All Blacks, the Irish, the French, the English, or Argentina in Pool A. They could rise into the top six during a busy November, however: the English team, the Italian side, Ireland, and France are their opponents, with a match versus the Japanese team in Tokyo also planned for 25 October.

Wales, meanwhile, are balanced in twelfth place, with the Japanese side behind, and the implications of dropping to thirteenth and into pot three are possibly significant.

American Presence and Future Tournaments

An additional new dimension for 2027 is the participation of five nations from the American continent: the Argentine team, Uruguay, the United States, Canada, and the Chilean squad – with either Paraguay or Brazil potentially making it six. From World Rugby's perspective, engagement from the Americas is positive, particularly with the 2031 World Cup set to be hosted by the United States, and the selection process for the 2035 tournament was launched last month.

Current Focus

For now, however. The second installment of Brazil versus Paraguay prepares a four-way qualifying contest, combined with a potential standings change throughout Europe in November. No matter the outcome, Chile's successful qualification for a second Rugby World Cup has undoubtedly made them as a resounding success story.
