A courageous railway employee who stepped in to save passengers during a multiple knife attack on a high-speed train has sustained critical injuries, police confirmed on Sunday.
CCTV footage allegedly depicts the employee trying to stop the attacker as the train traveled between Peterborough and Huntingdon in the county. Bystanders recounted a frightening 14-minute period after the train departed Peterborough, with bloodied victims running through compartments.
The suspect, a 32-year-old citizen from Peterborough, is in detention for questioning. Authorities announced a significant event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.
The incident on the weekend led to 11 people being treated in medical facilities after the train made an unplanned stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Several people have now been discharged from hospital.
A bystander filmed the individual waving a large knife and being subdued with a stun device as he faced police on the platform. He was reportedly heard yelling, "End my life, end my life."
“This awful event has created broad consequences. We are thinking of the victims and their families – particularly the brave employee of train personnel whose relatives are being supported by trained officers,” stated a senior police officer.
Train unions were quick to praise employees and call for increased action. A union official stated he would be “seeking urgent discussions with authorities, rail employers and police to ensure that we have the best available assistance, resources and effective protocols in place”.
A different union leader urged the train operator and authorities “to act quickly to examine safety, to support the impacted workers, and to make sure nothing like this happens again”.
The train driver who stopped the train at Huntingdon was reported as being “very shaken” but “good”, and has been praised by union representatives for doing “precisely what was needed”.
“He didn’t stop the service in the center of two stations where it’s obviously challenging for the first responders to access, but he carried on traveling until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the assistance was almost waiting,” explained a association official.
Authorities said they got the initial emergency calls at 7:39 pm, and the train was compelled to make an unscheduled stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
One observer described at first wondering if the event was a Halloween prank, but quickly realized from people's expressions that it was serious.
Authorities have confirmed there is no evidence to indicate the event was a terrorist attack and have requested the public to provide with any additional information.
Train operations on the impacted line are anticipated to experience delays until Monday, with passengers recommended to defer their journeys where possible.
