Former US treasury secretary the Harvard professor is exiting the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just days after a series of electronic messages between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became public.
Summers stated in a statement that he was "thankful for the privilege to have participated, optimistic about the promise of the company, and eagerly await following their advancement".
The prominent academic, who once headed Harvard University, announced on recently that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his relationship with Epstein.
The recently released messages showed that the official corresponded with the financier until the eve of the financier's 2019 detention for suspected sex trafficking of young people.
In additional comments, the artificial intelligence company said it understood his decision to resign.
"We value his many contributions and the perspective he provided to the Board," OpenAI remarked.
This news arrives after both chambers of the US legislature agreed on recently to endorse a bill that would require the Department of Justice to make public its files on Jeffrey Epstein.
The measure will then head to the administration of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. He has stated he expects to sign the bill, after changing his position on the subject following pressure from his supporters.
A group of financier-linked messages disclosed by the House Oversight Committee last week referenced multiple prominent individuals in the financier's former circle, without implying any criminal activity by those people.
The messages revealed that the economist and the financier dined together frequently, with the billionaire often attempting to introduce the official to notable world leaders.
After the correspondence were released with the public, Summers stated he assumed "total ownership for my poor decision to continue communicating with the financier".
He continued that he wanted "to restore confidence and fix relationships with the people most important to me".
Summers held senior posts under party leaders; acting as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as head of the National Economic Council under the former leader.
He led the institution from the early 2000s and is still a faculty member there. When announcing his departure from public commitments previously on this week, he stated he would persist with his educational duties.
Following his statement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning policy institute in the capital where the professor was a researcher, confirmed that he was not associated with the group.
The former official joined the directorate of the AI company, which creates the language model, in last year - following a failed attempt to replace its top executive OpenAI's head.
