Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and at least 15 additional individuals got wounded in a seemingly premeditated blast caused by gas at a rural property in northern Italy.
The blast took place as police and firefighters entered the residence close to Verona to enforce an eviction order for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.
Each of the three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri force.
A man and a woman were arrested at the site and one more individual who fled after the blast was apprehended soon after. Each of them have been admitted to the hospital.
The blast could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the area revealed the property left as a heap of debris.
“We are in a period of mourning,” said the Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that efforts had been made to evict the three family members in the past.
The head of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, stated the property was under an removal notice due to financial obligations accumulated by the property owners.
Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to talk with the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe a family member set off the explosion.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief Commander Papagno stated to news outlets.
A propane tank had been ignited, and the explosion immediately struck our officers,” he explained.
Incendiary devices were also found at the residence, the interior minister said.
The wounded by the explosion comprised eleven more officers of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a emergency responder.
According to the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had was without power.
He believed the detonation had happened on a level above the doorway and stated to the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the blast, he revealed officers had “detected a whistling noise, likely the gas canisters being activated”.
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants stated to Italian media, mentioning that the family members had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
Defence Minister Minister Crosetto united with other government officials in commemorating the trio of personnel who had died in the line of duty.
