Alphabet to Invest $15bn to Build AI Data Hub in India

Computing Infrastructure
The Nation ranks as a top choice for data centres due to its affordable data rates and rapidly growing digital audience.

The parent firm of Google Alphabet Inc. plans to commit $15 billion to establish an artificial intelligence data center in southern India's Andhra Pradesh state.

The infrastructure, to be established in the harbor town of Visakhapatnam city, is set to become a segment of the worldwide network of Google of artificial intelligence hubs distributed over twelve different countries.

"It stands as the greatest artificial intelligence center that we are committing funds to worldwide, apart from the United States," Thomas Kurien announced at an event in capital Delhi on Tuesday, adding that the investment will be spread throughout the next half-decade.

The announcement occurs when US President Donald Trump has been urging American companies to prioritise domestic investment.

India's Increasing Significance in AI Infrastructure

The nation has risen as a major hub for AI data centers. India's affordable data pricing and swiftly increasing online population have turned it into a center for AI and cloud growth for tech giants.

"This center will introduce our pioneering tech solutions to enterprises and users in the country, speeding up AI development and stimulating expansion nationwide," commented Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet.

Specifics of the Project

A formal agreement to complete the venture will be signed this Tuesday, the Andhra Pradesh government said.

"This represents a significant advancement for our state's digital future, technological innovation, and international reputation," stated the state's technology minister Nara Lokesh, the technology minister.

The venture will merge AI and cloud systems with renewable energy systems and an broader fiber-optic system.

Andhra Pradesh's Data Center Vision

The venture is included in the state government's strategy to create 6GW of computing facility capacity by 2029.

Data centres are actual buildings that contain the computer and network hardware that companies use to collect, process, store, and distribute data.

They feature hosting servers, memory systems and network equipment like firewalls and routers, along with the necessary power and cooling systems to operate them.

Investment Incentives

Within the state, the state authorities has been granting subsidised land and electricity to entice international investors.

Market Development

The country's computing facility market has grown rapidly in the recent half-decade, crossing the 1GW capability milestone in 2024 and nearly tripling its 2019 capacity.
